Assalamualaikum. Hi.
I once wrote about how I was diagnosed with depression in this post here(click). I mentioned how I was on medication for it. I was on Luvox, and my doctor said it could harm me if I plan to get pregnant, so now I have stopped taking the medication since I got married. Over the past 3 years since I was diagnosed, I have made good progress. I still continue with my regular appointment with my doctor, but all is well, Alhamdulillah.
I realised that nowadays many people are struggling with mental health. I saw ranting remarks on social media, on blogs, about how these people are close to getting crazy dealing with it themselves. One remark intrigued me to write this post. She posted on her social media about how she went to a clinic, but was tossed around, and the doctor said she might have had thyroid issues instead of struggling with mental health. She wrote that she was devastated that not even a professional helped her. Hence, I want to share my experience in getting that mental health treatment.
I remembered that I decided to seek professional treatment because I could no longer handle it by myself, after about a year of struggling. The day I went to the hospital was the day I felt so weak. I went straight to the emergency triage counter. Initially, I thought I went there with a stable condition, and I was okay. I just wanted to ask how I could make an appointment with a psychiatrist. But the moment the triage officers asked why I wanted to see a psychiatrist, I burst into tears and had a hard time breathing. They immediately checked for my pulse, and my blood pressure was so high that I remembered it being 180 - 200 at that time.
After quite some time and a clear explanation, the doctor made a reference letter to the Psychiatry Department. I was told to bring the letter to the Psychiatry Department. There, a psychiatrist had a conversation with me - like a consultation - and then he booked an appointment for me. Since then, I have had regular appointments with a psychiatrist monitoring my mental health progress.
I'm getting better, Alhamdulillah. I have had very few to no episodes of mental breakdown anymore. I hope anyone who struggles with mental health will heal soon, too. If you ever need a stranger to tell your stories, I'm all ears. Just email me at my Contact tab.
Till then,
Lya

*Sending hugs and prayers*
ReplyDeleteI also did seek help for mental health issue since last year, and it remains as one of the best decision I ever did for myself. The first time I went there, I was in a terrible state (of not being able to think carefully). But, I am lucky because I went to seek help before my symptoms worsened :')
Making the first step was so hard. Yet, once the step has been taken -- we have to keep going.
Hopefully, we would always make a good progression over the years :)
*hugs* Many people avoid talking about mental illness because it is still considered taboo. But I think we should share our experiences to help others, to make them realize that they're not alone in this
